Brief Study Descriptions

Thank you for your interest in one or both of our studies. My name is Dr Robert DiSilvestro. I have a Ph.D. in biochemistry and I am an Emeritus Professor of Human Nutrition at Ohio State University. Emeritus mans I am retired, but remain eligible to do work at the university. HOWEVER, THESE STUDIES ARE NOT BEING DONE THROUGH OHIO STATE OR ANY OTHER UNIVERSITY. The study is being done through my small company called Medinutra LLC with the help of LabCorp (who is doing the blood draws and blood laboratory analysis). Study summaries are given below.

TRIGLYCERIDE STUDY
This study looks at the effects of two types of nutritional supplements on blood lipids with an emphasis on triglycerides. The study will also look at some blood measures relevant to low level inflammation. Low level inflammation, which falls below what is seen for situations like arthritis or a muscle injury, may gradually speed up aging and affect immune function. The study is registered with the federal government.

People in the study take 1 capsule per day for 6 weeks with a small blood draw before and after the 6 weeks (at a LabCorp location near where the subjects live or work). Each subject will get one of the following:
Placebo (a very low amount of dietary fiber not expected to directly affect the study measures)
Longvida® curcumin (an extract of the spice turmeric + some natural ingredients to aid absorption); given at the dose usually sold
Longvida® curcumin given at half the dose usually sold
Astaxanthin, a non-essential nutrient found in foods like salmon and in algae

The primary, though not only requirement to be in the study is to have triglyceride readings either in the upper end of normal or moderately elevated. To see if you are eligible, you need to fill out a short eligibility questionnaire. You can get one by emailing nutritionstudy111@gmail.com or by clicking clicking here. Either way, the completed form should be returned to nutritionstudy111@gmail.com. You will be notified whether you are or are not eligible. You can return the form as an attachment or cut and paste the question sheet into an email message. If you are eligible, you will be sent a fairly long consent form to read. You will also get instructions about how to talk with a study person. That person will see if you understand the consent form, give you a chance to ask questions, and enroll you in the study if you want to start. You can also take more time to think about it. Thanks again for considering participation.

WHEY STUDY
People in the study will drink one serving of one of two types of whey protein per day for 6 weeks. Some unpublished research suggested one of these two whey protein could produce moderate but important decreases in serum cholesterol readings. Which protein a subject gets for the 6 weeks will be assigned randomly. Subjects will not know which whey they get (though after the study completes, group results will be communicated to the participants). A small blood draw will be done before and after the 6 weeks (at a LabCorp location near where the subjects live or work). The protein will be supplied as powder that is mixed with water. Suggestions will be provided for flavoring additions. This study is registered with the federal government.
